Every roll is measured before it ships. Natural material: color and grain vary. Soak about 30 minutes before use.

Two cane sheets for one pair of cabinet doors, cut from the same roll so the left door and the right door match. Natural cane varies in tone from roll to roll, and two doors side by side show any difference, which is why both sheets in a pair come off one roll.

They are for doors with the center panel removed: a flat-panel door you are updating, or a frame you have built. The cane goes on the back, so the frame stays the face of the door.

How to fit them:

  • Take the door off and remove the hardware and the center panel.
  • Soak the cane in warm water for about 30 minutes.
  • Lay the door face down. Run a bead of wood glue around the back of the frame, then lay the damp cane over it with the shiny side down, toward the front of the door.
  • Staple from the middle of each side out toward the corners, keeping the rows of the weave straight and the cane snug.
  • Trim the excess just inside the outer edge of the frame, and cover the cut edge with thin trim if you want a tidy look inside the cabinet.

Leave the doors flat while the cane dries. It shrinks as it dries and pulls tight across the opening.

Sizes are per sheet: 12 x 24, 16 x 30 or 20 x 36 in, in open weave with octagonal holes or square weave with a simple grid.

How to choose

Measure the opening in the door, the hole where the panel was, not the whole door. Each sheet must be at least 1 in larger than the opening on every side, so add 2 in to the width and to the height and pick the smallest size that covers both: 12 x 24 in for openings up to 10 x 22 in, 16 x 30 in up to 14 x 28 in, 20 x 36 in up to 18 x 34 in. If the two doors differ, go by the larger one.

Open weave is the classic see-through look. Square weave is a tidier grid that suits shaker and modern cabinets. For three or more doors, cut them all from one roll so every door matches.

Questions

Does the cane go on the front or the back of the door?

The back. The frame stays the face of the door, and the staples, glue and cut edge stay inside the cabinet, where thin trim can cover them.

Which way does the shiny side face?

Toward the front of the door, so it faces the room. With the door lying face down, that means shiny side down.

Will the two doors really match?

Both sheets in a pair are cut from the same roll, so they start out the same tone. Natural cane darkens slowly with light, so doors in the same light age together.

What staples should I use?

Short ones that cannot come through the front of the frame; test one in a hidden spot first. Place them close together so the cane pulls evenly.
