Some outdoor furniture uses a broad, flat weave that looks chunky and modern: deep lounge chairs, sectionals, daybeds and hanging egg chairs. Their strands are wider than standard repair strip, and a narrow strip woven into them stands out. This 12 mm strip, a little under 1/2 in wide, is made for that look.

It comes in a long 197 ft (60 m) coil because it is meant for bigger jobs as well as repairs: full re-wraps of seats and backs, or a frame that has lost most of its weave. Colors are gradient grey and dark brown.

How to work it:

  • Remove the old weave from the area and clean the frame underneath.
  • Fix the start of the strip on the underside or back of the frame.
  • Weave over and under, matching the spacing and pattern of the original.
  • Keep the strip flat; a twist shows clearly on a wide strand.
  • Finish each end on the underside, tucked under several strands.

A wide strip is stiffer around tight corners than a narrow one, so go slowly at the frame edges and use a flat prying tool to open a path under tight strands. Like the rest of our PE wicker, it is used dry.

If you are re-wrapping a whole seat, photograph the old pattern from above and below before you strip it. Copying a pattern is much easier than working it out again.

This is synthetic PE wicker for resin patio furniture. It is not for natural rattan, cane or reed.

How to choose

Width first. Lay a ruler across one strand on your furniture: if it is close to 12 mm (about 1/2 in), this is your strip. If it is nearer 8.5 mm (about 1/3 in), the standard flat repair strip fits better, and round strands need the 5 mm round strand.

For a full re-wrap, estimate the amount before you order. Measure the length of one row of strands across the seat or back, multiply by the number of rows, count rows in both directions if the weave runs both ways, and add about 10 percent for tucks and ends. If the total is over 197 ft, order two coils at the same time.

Color: gradient grey or dark brown. Compare them with your furniture outdoors in daylight.

Questions

Can I patch furniture woven with narrower strands using 12 mm strip?

It will hold, but the wider strand stands out against the old weave. Measure your strands and match the width for a repair that blends in.

What should I check on the frame before re-wrapping?

Look for cracked welds, loose joints and rust while the weave is off. Clean the frame and treat any rust first, because the new weave will hide it again.

What does gradient grey look like?

It is a two-tone grey, with lighter and darker shades along the strip, so it blends in on grey furniture that is not one flat color.

Is it suitable for natural rattan pieces?

No. This is plastic strip for synthetic resin furniture. Natural rattan furniture needs natural cane or reed.
