Plastic Square Cane Webbing (PE), 24 x 60 in Sheet, Tan or Black
Plastic PE square weave cane webbing, one 24 x 60 in sheet in natural tan or black. No soaking, moisture tolerant, for outdoor cabinets and vanities.
A square weave grid, the same right-angle pattern as radio weave cane, made from polyethylene strands instead of rattan. It comes as one flat 24 x 60 in sheet in natural tan or black.
Because it is plastic, it skips the soaking step and tolerates moisture, so it goes where natural cane would get wet:
- Outdoor cabinets on a patio or porch
- Patio screens
- Bathroom vanity doors
- Cabinet doors next to a sink or in a laundry room
Black gives a sharp, graphic grid on white, grey or dark painted cabinets. Tan is warmer and closer to the look of natural cane.
Cutting and fitting:
- Draw all your pieces on paper and fit them into 24 x 60 in before you cut anything.
- Cut along a single row of holes with sharp scissors, or with a utility knife against a straightedge, so the edge stays straight and the grid stays square.
- Lay the frame face down and line one strand up with the frame edge. A plastic grid will not shrink and pull itself straight later, so any slant you staple in stays there.
- Staple the middle of each side first, stretching the sheet flat, then work to the corners. Run glue under the edge, then hide the staples behind trim. Outdoors, use stainless steel staples.
For a free-standing patio screen, build the frame from lumber meant for outdoor use, staple the sheet across the back, and cover the edge with a second frame or a strip of trim.
When it gets dusty, hose it down or wipe it with mild soapy water.
How to choose
Choose the color first: black for a modern, graphic look, natural tan to stay close to real cane.
Then plan the cuts. Measure each opening and add at least 1 in per side for stapling. From one 24 x 60 in sheet you can cut one piece for an opening up to 22 x 58 in, two for openings up to 22 x 28 in, or three for openings up to 22 x 18 in. Narrow doors can also sit side by side: two openings up to 10 in wide fit across the 24 in width. If your pieces do not fit in one sheet, order a second.
Questions
Is this the same as radio weave?
It has the same square grid pattern as radio weave cane, but it is made of polyethylene, not rattan, so it needs no soaking.
Is it OK on a bathroom vanity?
Yes. It tolerates splashes and humidity, which is why it suits vanity doors. Wipe off standing water; the wooden frame around it is usually the part that suffers from damp, not the PE.
Do I need to wet it before installing?
No, it goes in dry. Unlike rattan, it will not shrink tighter afterward, so stretch it flat as you staple.
Can I cover a large patio screen with it?
One sheet covers a frame opening up to 22 x 58 in. For a bigger screen, divide the frame into panels with a center rail so every sheet edge lands on wood.
