Not all outdoor wicker is flat. Some resin patio pieces are woven from round strands, and many flat-woven chairs use a round strand to wrap the legs, bind the joints or lash the corners of the frame. When those wraps slip or crack, this is what replaces them.

The strand is synthetic PE wicker, 5 mm across (just under 3/16 in), in a 98 ft (30 m) coil. It is made for synthetic patio furniture and is not a substitute for natural rattan, cane or reed.

Good uses:

  • Re-wrapping a leg or frame tube where the old wrap has loosened or split
  • Replacing broken strands on round-weave chairs and tables
  • Lashing a corner or joint where the weave meets the frame

To re-wrap a leg, unwind the old strand back to a sound section and cut it there. Lay the end of the new strand along the leg and wind the first few turns over it so it is trapped. Keep winding tightly, each turn touching the last, with no gaps or overlaps. To finish, slide the end back under the last few turns with a flat tool, pull it snug and trim it close. A dab of glue that bonds plastic under the final turns adds security.

For round-weave repairs, cut out the broken strands, weave the new strand along the path of the old ones, and tuck the ends behind the weave. Round strand goes on dry, with no soaking.

How to choose

Color: dark grey, dark brown, or natural for lighter pieces. Hold the furniture's existing wraps up against the options in daylight, outdoors, and choose the nearest shade.

Profile: this strand is round and 5 mm thick. Measure the old strand across with calipers or a ruler. If it is flat rather than round, you need flat PE strip instead, 8.5 mm or 12 mm wide.

Amount: one coil holds 98 ft. For leg wraps, work it out with the turns-per-inch estimate on this page; for weaving repairs, measure one old strand end to end and multiply by the number you are replacing. Order a second coil if the total comes close to 98 ft.

Questions

How much strand does it take to wrap a leg?

At 5 mm thick the strand makes about 5 turns per inch of leg. Measure once around the leg with a string, multiply by 5, then by the number of inches to cover, and add about a foot for the ends.

Can I use this on natural rattan furniture?

It is better not to. This is plastic made for resin patio furniture; wraps on natural rattan are done with natural binder cane, which looks and ages like the frame.

Can I wrap a metal frame directly?

Yes, that is how most outdoor wraps are done. Clean the tube, sand off loose paint or rust and touch it up first, so the wrap sits tight on a sound surface.

Is round PE strand the same as round reed?

No. Round reed is the natural rattan core used for baskets and indoor wicker. This strand is plastic, for outdoor resin furniture.
