Hand caning a seat through drilled holes means pulling each strand tight, then keeping it tight while you thread the next one. Pegs do the keeping. Press a tapered peg into the hole beside the strand and it pinches the cane against the side of the hole, so it cannot slip back.

The pegs travel with you as you weave. One holds the start of a strand, another holds where it turns, and as each strand is anchored by the weaving around it, you pull the peg and use it again a few holes along. A seat usually needs 10 to 12 pegs in use at a time.

When the weaving is done, pegs have a second job. A peg left in a hole and trimmed flush plugs it for good, holding the strand ends inside, and the binder cane is laid over the top.

Because they taper, they fit a range of hole sizes. Push one in by hand or with a light tap until it is snug. Hammering pegs hard into old, dry seat rails can split the wood, and a snug peg holds just as well.

These pegs are for hand caning only. A pressed cane seat, with webbing in a routed groove, uses wedges and spline instead.

How to choose

The 12 pack covers the 10 to 12 pegs a seat has in use at once, which is enough for a single chair if you do not plan to leave any in.

Choose 50 if you will leave pegs in as permanent plugs, since those do not come back out, or if you are caning more than one seat, teaching, or working on a chair with a caned back as well as a seat. A few always split or roll under the bench, and a spare handful saves a stop halfway through a row.

Questions

How many pegs do I need?

A seat usually has 10 to 12 in use at a time. Get the 50 pack if you will leave some in as plugs or cane more than one chair.

Are these for pressed cane seats?

No. Pressed cane seats use wedges and spline. Pegs are for hand caning, where strand cane is woven through drilled holes.

Will they fit my holes?

They are tapered, so they fit a range of hole sizes. Press one in until it grips the strand; it should be snug without forcing the wood apart.

Can I reuse them?

Yes. The working pegs come out and go back in all through the job. Only the ones you leave as plugs stay in the chair.
